Sleep: Key to Muscle Gains?

Lately I’ve been wondering if my slow progress has less to do with my workouts and more to do with my sleep. I train pretty hard, track my protein, and try to stay consistent, but I only get around 5–6 hours of sleep on most weekdays because of work. On weekends I crash for 9–10 hours and actually feel stronger in the gym after that. It made me think maybe recovery is the missing piece. Everyone talks about training splits and supplements, but not as much about sleep. For those who’ve been lifting longer, how big of a difference did proper recovery actually make for your muscle growth?

From my experience, sleep is way more important than people give it credit for. A couple years ago I was training hard but constantly tired, and my lifts stalled even though my diet was on point. Once I made it a priority to get at least 7–8 hours consistently, my strength started climbing again and I felt less sore between sessions. I’ve read some broader health and lifestyle pieces on https://wellsfargocenterarts.org/ and even came across random debates about oral steroids online, which always focus on shortcuts. But honestly, recovery habits like sleep, stress management, and deload weeks had a bigger impact on my physique than any supplement ever did. Training breaks you down — sleep is when you actually build back up.
